At PortaPies Bakery we make a fusion of traditional hand pies like the classic Jamaican Patty and the British Pasty. Portable meaning we deliver freshly baked pies right to your door and portable meaning it fits right in your hand for you to scoff down while you're on the move.“Matthew, mark, Luke and John, PUT DOWN THE FORK AND USE your HAND!”- A saying my grandma would always say as her cooking would have lots of finger licking food that you wouldn’t dare use a knife and fork for!
At PortaPies Bakery we make a range of signature pastry crusts for our pies such as:
Our Traditional Jamaican Patty crust: which is full of buttery flakes that melts in your mouth.
Our Traditional British puff pastry: which is puffy, light and layered so that each mouthful is a flaky buttery crunch
Our Traditional Jamaican fried dumpling: which is light and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside
And our signature glazed puff pastry: which is sticky, sweet and flaky. The messier the better!
So what inspired me?
My grandma Mrs. Patsy Johnson was born in the small parish of St Mary, Jamaica in the year 1940 where She would learn traditional Jamaican home cooking and baking, perfecting her skills in Caribbean cooking and made delicious meals that was filled with a wealth of herbs, spices and most importantly with LOVE.
grandma moved to London, England as part of the Windrush generation where she would take her culture and recipes with her. I would later be born in the heart of North London and lived with my Mum, aunty and Grandma where my love and passion for food would grow, as I watched and helped my grandma cook up a storm EVERY Sunday after Church without fail, while singing hymns and watching one of her favorite programs: songs of praise.
Everyone LOVES grandmas cooking! as she combined traditional Jamaican herbs, spices and techniques with classic British dishes to create a fusion of flavors that would have you “scraping the pattern off me plate”- one of her famous quotes.
Each of our pies are individually hand made with the experience and love of generations and generations of passion for food. We want to bring the love of grandma’s food right to your front door so that you can experience the great tastes of Jamaican and British pies.
